What should my cholesterol level be?

Written by: Dr. Rowena | Posted: Dec 03 2008

Q: All of the info I read about cholesterol says it should be below 200. However, my navy flight surgeon from years ago who is now an alternative medicine doctor, says at my age (73), it should be 220, which it has been for years. He also says to stay away from aspirin and statins which I am taking. What do you think?

A: In a healthy adult, a total cholesterol level of less than 200 is considered good. Lower levels are recommended for people with certain diseases. This is a decision that should be made in consultation with your primary care physician.

Written by: Dr. Rowena | Posted: Aug 27 2007

Q: Will stones on both kidneys make my BP increase?

A: Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Kidney stones and high blood pressure fall in this category. People with high blood pressure are much more likely to develop kidney stones but it is not clear that the damage to the kidneys from stones causes the hypertension. It has been suggested that the relationship of the two diseases is caused by a calcium imbalance in the body.

Are there any homeopathic remedies for hypertension?

Written by: Dr. Rowena | Posted: May 17 2007

Q: I have hypertension, colitis and liver disease. What med(s) have the least side effects in patients with these conditions? Also, are there other homeopathic remedies for hypertension?

A: With diseases that affect different parts of the body, it is a balancing act to find medications to adequately treat all the conditions. A drug with the least side-effects for one condition may be the worst possible drug for the other disease. Both your doctor and your pharmacist work together to figure out best combinations of medications for treatment. Homeopathy is based on treating symptoms, so available remedies for any disease are individualized.
