Atripla and blood pressure

Written by: Dr. Rowena | Posted: Apr 08 2009

Q: Do you know if there’s a relationship between using Atripla and increased hypertension? Obviously, I am HIV+ and am on several meds for hypertension.

A: I am unaware of a clinical study showing that use of Atripla causes high blood pressure. However use of HAART for HIV has been associated with hypertension. The same classes of drugs found in Atripla are used with HAART so a relationship is possible. To see a discussion of HAART and hypertension, click here.

What is a blood pressure medication that would be safe for my liver?

Written by: Dr. Rowena | Posted: Oct 08 2007

Q: I have a malignant tumor on my liver. Can you suggest a safe BP medication that would be safe for my liver?

A: A beta-blocker, such as atenolol (Tenormin), is an example of a drug that can be used to treat hypertension in people with liver disease. It is a reasonable choice because the drug is metabolized by the kidney, not the liver. Depending upon the extent of your liver involvement, it might be safe to use other classes of drugs with careful monitoring. You should discuss the options with your personal physician.
