Can statin drugs raise blood pressure?

Q: Is there a correlation between statin drugs and elevated blood pressure? My pressure goes up when I take my cholesterol pills; however, when I stop taking the pills for a month, pressure is normal.
A: Any medication can cause any type of reaction in an individual. Blood pressure changes are a lesser known side effect of statin drugs. Because high cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease, you need to talk to your doctor about what you are experiencing. There are other medications and lifestyle modifications that can help you lower your cholesterol without elevating your blood pressure.

Q: Will taking Vicodin (for osteoarthritis and osteoporosis) affect my dosage of BP medication and/or give me stomach problems?
A: Vicodin is a habit forming pain reliever containing hydrocodone (similar to codeine) and acetaminophen (generic Tylenol). It is classified as a narcotic. With repeated use, tolerance develops to narcotics and more drug is required to obtain the same pain relief. Toxic effects, including blood pressure changes, occur with higher dosages and with withdrawal.
