Are high blood pressure and high pulse rate linked?

Written by: Dr. Rowena | Posted: Nov 25 2008

Q: Do high blood pressure and a high pulse rate go hand in hand? Or are they different problems?

A: High blood pressure and a fast heart beat, or pulse, don’t necessarily go together. Fever is a common cause of tachycardia, a pulse rate greater than 100. On the other hand, a high resting pulse can be a sign of not getting enough exercise and lack of exercise is a risk factor for getting high blood pressure. The normal range for the pulse in an adult is 60 to 100. Your pulse increases with activity and decreases with rest.

Can taking too much amoxicillin raise blood pressure?

Written by: Dr. Rowena | Posted: Jan 28 2008

Q: Will taking excessive amounts of Amoxicillin when I have dental work done cause my BP to rise?

A: I assume you are referring to the standard adult 2.0 gram dose of Amoxicillin that is recommended by the American Heart Association for people with certain heart conditions to prevent bacterial endocarditis prior to a dental procedure. This should not elevate your blood pressure but the stress and anxiety associated with seeing the dentist certainly could.
