Increase in hypertension medication

Written by: Dr. Rowena | Posted: Oct 10 2008

Q: After many years of high BP controlled with 20mg of Monopril, it’s suddenly high even with 40mg. During this time, swelling in the legs has also been a problem. My fluid pill [diuretic] was increased from 20mg to 40mg and now 60mg was suggested. What should I be looking for to control these problems?

A: You need to discuss this with your doctor. Clearly something has changed. Perhaps you have gained a lot of weight, have developed venous insufficiency, or some other more serious medical problem. Without knowing what has caused the change, it is not possible to make a treatment recommendation.
