Q: Is ED [Erectile Dysfunction] caused from Hypertension or from the medication to control it?
A: Some high blood pressure medicines can cause sexual dysfunction. Talk to your doctor about your problem. If your erectile dysfunction began when you started taking medicine for high blood pressure, it could be drug related. Keep in mind, disease in the blood vessels to the penis is a frequent cause of erectile dysfunction. Untreated high blood pressure can damage the blood vessels of the penis.

Q: How many times can one who has high blood pressure have sex in a day or week? Is it advisable to use any sex enhancing drug?
A: Frequency of relations is usually determined by the participating individuals. Doctors determine when it is safe to return to sexual activity after an illness, not how much is appropriate. Talk to you doctor about any problems you are having that would lead you to consider taking a sex enhancing drug. Drugs of this class can have life threatening side effects.

Q: I have high blood pressure and use Moduretic for treatment. How safe is viagra to treat the side effect of impotence I experience from the use of this drug?
A: Without knowing your complete medical history, I can’t say whether or not Viagra is a good choice to treat your impotence. You should discuss this with your doctor as using Viagra with uncontrolled high blood pressure could be a problem. Generally speaking, diuretics can be used safely with Viagra.

Q: I’m 72 years old, strong and still working as a music teacher. I take 1000 mg metformin for diabetes, eat well, weigh 198 lbs. What is causing my impotence? Is it just age related?
A: Since you are on metformin, I am assuming you are diabetic. Even though you are strong, you have a sedentary occupation. You didn’t give your height but most people who weigh 198 pounds are at least overweight if not obese. Based on this, it is likely your impotence is caused by vascular damage from uncontrolled diabetes. Please accept my apology if this is not the case. Uncontrolled diabetes combined with obesity greatly increases the risk of a heart attack. I’d suggest that you speak to your doctor who knows your personal medical history.

Q: Can high blood pressure have any effect on your sex life?
A: High blood pressure can negatively affect your sex life. Damage to blood vessels can result in impotence. In addition, sexual dysfunction is an adverse reaction to some medications used to treat hypertension. Unlike medications, the RESPeRATE has no sexual side effects.

Q: What are the best types of BP meds I can take without causing sexual dysfunction and impotence?
A: Not all the diuretics used to treat high blood pressure are associated with sexual side effects but sometimes just a diuretic isn’t enough to control hypertension. Some of the problems caused by blood pressure medication may be dose related so adjusting dosing can improve sexual function. Your doctor needs to know your concerns and figure out the best treatment plan for you. As an alternative to drugs, you might want to consider use of the RESPeRATE. Regular use lowers blood pressure without sexual side effects.

Q: Is sexual intercourse every night beneficial for the people suffering from hypertension?
A: I have never seen a clinical study recommending daily sexual intercourse as a treatment for high blood pressure although studies have shown that older adults believe that quality of life is enhanced with sex. During the act of intercourse, blood pressure rises and peaks with climax. Following orgasm, blood pressure returns to normal for the individual. The physical activity associated with having sex increases the risk of a heart attack in those who are physically inactive.

Q: Can 5mg of Altace a day affect my sex drive?
A: Blood pressure medications are notorious for having sexual side effects. These include a decreased sex drive, impotence, and difficulty achieving orgasm. According to Gold Standard, Inc. 2007, a decreased sex drive is not listed as an adverse reaction to Altace. However, different people respond differently to medications. You should discuss this with your doctor to see if changing medication improves your situation.

Q: I have been taking Tenormin Plus tablets (with Atenolol and Chlorthalidone) and now have less of a sexual desire. Is that a side effect of the medicine?
A: Tenormin Plus is a combination of the beta blocker Atenolol and the diuretic Chlorthalidone. Erectile dysfunction is a known side effect of both Atenolol and Chlorthalidone. A decrease in libido or sexual desire is associated only with Chlorthalidone. If you are having problems just with libido, not performance, you might want to talk to your doctor about prescribing a different diuretic to take with Atenolol or using RESPeRATE. No sexual side effects occur with RESPeRATE use.
