Blood pressure and Aleve

Q: I just read about the effects of NSAIDS on BP medications. I am on Atacand 8 mg and I take one Aleve a day for joint pains. When I try to go to Tylenol or ASA I very soon begin to have a great deal of pain. I have not noticed much change in my BP being on Aleve. What do you think?
A: People with high blood pressure can take medications like Aleve as long as their blood pressure stays in control. To be safe, you should discuss your daily use of Aleve with your doctor.

Q: I am in rehab after having a knee replacement. I have a lot of scar tissue and with that a lot of pain. My blood pressure is up and I am on medication. Does pain make your blood pressure go up?
A: Pain and certain drugs used to treat pain can cause an increase in blood pressure. However, your blood pressure should be in good enough control not to rise to abnormally high levels during sessions to rehabilitate your knee. Notify your doctor.

Q: What natural substance can be used for pain relief?
A: Ice and/or heat are natural pain relievers. Ice has an anti-inflammatory effect and heat helps with relaxation. Often ice and heat are used alternatively to get the benefit of both effects. For example, with a simple muscle sprain, 15 -20 minutes of an ice pack is used to counter inflammation and then followed with a heating pad to encourage muscle relaxation.

Q: My husband has high BP and when he gets a headache or a backache he takes BC (a powdered medicine). He is currently on 40mg of Lotensin for his BP medication. Is this dangerous for him to do? Should he replace the pain reliever he takes?
A: BC Powder is basically a combination of aspirin and caffeine. With controlled blood pressure, there should not be a problem using this medication on an intermittent basis. Both caffeine and aspirin elevate blood pressure so daily use could make blood pressure more difficult to control.

Q: I take aspirin daily to thin my blood. Can this cause hair loss?
A: Aspirin has not been associated with hair loss. Crash diets, emotional stress, serious illness, and drugs can increase the rate of normal hair shedding but this does not result in permanent hair loss.

Q: I take Tylenol instead of ibuprofen with my BP meds but have felt drowsy all day. Why? Is Aleve ok to take instead?
A: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications such as Aleve are known to raise blood pressure so they may not be a good class of drug for you to take. Sleepiness is not usually a side effect of Tylenol but any drug can cause anything in a given individual. You should talk to your doctor about your need to take Tylenol on a regular basis. Perhaps your drowsiness is related to another problem.

Q: I take ibuprophen to help with sinus headaches. Can I take this with avalide or will it raise my BP?
A: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, can interact with high blood pressure medicines and cause them to not be as effective in controlling blood pressure. You need to talk to your doctor about other, safer medications you can take to treat your sinus symptoms.
