What causes vertigo?

Q: I got vertigo about 1 week ago and was told that it was caused by a virus. Is that true?
A: Yes, vertigo can be caused by a viral infection of the inner ear known as labyrinthitis or vestibulitis. This is not an uncommon diagnosis.
