Should I have blood tests done before I start taking my medications?

Written by: Dr. Rowena | Posted: May 10 2007

Q: Should someone be put on blood pressure medication and Lipitor without a blood test? My doctor prescribed it only because my BP had been high the last three times he saw me (two more times since last year)

A: Lipitor is a drug used to treat high blood fats. Sometimes people with high blood pressure also have high blood fats. Any time a doctor prescribes a medication, you need to ask why it is being prescribed and discuss the potential benefits versus risks in taking the drug.
