Low potassium diet for kidney failure

Written by: Dr. Rowena | Posted: Jul 14 2009

Q: I have kidney failure and have high potassium. I am not on dialysis yet but my function is about 18 to 20%. Is there any way to lower my potassium? Just about everything I eat has potassium and my diet doesn’t seem to help.

A: Potassium is found in many foods so an avoidance diet is difficult. Consider asking your doctor for a referral to see a nutritionist. A balanced diet based on low potassium containing foods you enjoy would help your kidneys. Your doctor might also need to prescribe medicine to lower your potassium.
