Q: How much sodium should I take daily for high blood pressure?

A: Excessive use of table salt, otherwise known as Sodium chloride, is felt to contribute to high blood pressure in individuals who are salt sensitive. For healthy individuals aged 19 to 50, The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies feels that a daily intake of 3.8 grams of salt a day is all that is needed to meet nutritional needs.
