Acute pain and blood pressure

Q: Sometimes I get hurt at work and my nurse tells me that my BP is a result of the pain. Does that make sense?
A: Acute pain causes an increase in blood pressure because pain increases sympathetic nerve activity. However, if your blood pressure readings are in the abnormal range, further evaluation is indicated. This is particularly true as your blood pressure has been elevated on more than one occasion.
